SEO Optimising

Ok so anyone who has ever tried to get up those Google rankings must share my frustrations. Myself and my business partner Trev have been working relentlessly for the few weeks. We are doing all the recommended, as listed below but are yet to be rewarded by a lift up the rankings from google. Hour after hour spent in front of this computer submitting back link after backlink. Very slow going. I am assured that there is no guaranteed success strategies for SEO but lots of tips. I will share with you some of what we are doing.

BackLinks. These are links to our website on other sites. A link to your own site is rated by google Dependant on how highly they rate the site your link is on. For instance if the likes of Amazon or ebay linked to your site (good luck with that) this would be highly regarded by google. Where as if it was just a random small unknown site linking to yours, it may be less valuable to your SEO work. Also sites linked to your own market are more valuable. So I am a pet supplies web site www.home2roost.co.uk so any sites in relation to pets would be regarded well for me to get a backlink from.

Social networksFacebook, twitter and the others. We have open accounts and pages linked to our site.

Blogs On your own site and popular blogging sites are well regarded as a good way to promote your site.

Meta's Creating good Meta keywords, tags and descriptions relating to your product or service. Also good text content relating to your product with use of key words. Anchor text appears to be good for google also. This is where a piece of text on your page doubles up as a weblink back to an appropriate page on your site. Eg the words 'DOG BEDS' could be a link back to my dog beds page.

Press releases there are sites dedicated to submitting news worthy articles about your site.

These are just some of the things we are spending our time on. Hope fully I can bring some real positive news on our efforts here. This being the case, all advice above will actually be useful!!

The launch (again)

Ok so the launch of the new improved www.home2roost.co.uk took place a couple of weeks ago. For those that are thinking of starting your own website and hoping for instant traffic, don't be fooled it is HARD work. We have been spending night after night just trying anything possible to get up those Google rankings. For the first few days we did not even register on Google for search terms for our new products. We are now hitting the late 200's for a Google link. this is great progress but lets be honest, who goes past page 2 when searching Google, let alone page 25?? So still a long way to go.
We are busy optimising the site as well as trying to obtain back links. Back links are links from other sites to our site. These, according to research, are crucial. It adds credibility to your site if others are prepared to add a link to your site. However, the quality of the site linking to you is important. If Google rank their site highly, this is a good link. If Google do not rate them well then this will not be of much use.

So yes in summary, very pleased with the site but lots of work to do now.

Re-think and relaunch

Hi, its been a while since I have blogged and for that I make no apologies. Starting our own business has taken so much time and commitment. So I will try to update the last 5 months in a couple of paragraphs.

So following the launch we actually made a sale within a few weeks. From the research we have done I believe this is quite an achievement to make an organic sale through Google in such a small amount of time. We went onto average around 1-2 sales per week within just a few months. This was done utilising articles that we read on Search Engine Optimisation (SEO). It is this that takes you from just existing on the Internet to actually coming on the first few pages of Google. This is so important as lets be honest, how many of us actually venture past page 2 or 3 at a push. We got a few products onto page 1 but I have to be honest it was hard work.

Despite achieving up 100 hits on our site per day we were not getting a great return rate in turning those hits into sales. Trev and I had a very honest and upfront conversation on a Saturday afternoon about what we thought may be wrong. We had to put aside any thoughts or feelings about offending each other and the work we had each completed on the site. We verbally tore our site and lack of customer product choice apart. We spoke about our dislikes of the site and what as a customer we like to see when landing on a website and navigating around it. This was several months ago now and we decided to take what we had learnt and start from scratch.
At first you do not realise how much you have learnt from the experiences of an early venture. However, we have learnt so much about SEO, website design, customer trust, bookkeeping, tax's and many other skills.

We are now just weeks away from launching the new www.home2roost.co.uk . It is going to be fantastic. The site looks professional and is easy to navigate. It also has an additional 1200 exciting new products. This time we are going to make a real impact.

Until next time, wish us luck!

The Launch

This is my first ever Blog. I wanted to share my experience of the first steps of setting up and launching my first ever business venture. I have spent many nights trawling the Internet looking for something. Something being everything. Something that will be the idea or inspiration to a new business and new future. Hopefully my blog can be of some inspiration for others.

www.home2roost.co.uk finally launched on the 1st May 2011. Myself and my business partner and best friend Trevor Pope have worked tirelessly to get the site launched.

Trev and I are just two normal hard working family men. Like many others out there, we have yearned to work for ourselves and be in control of our own destinies. We have been searching for THAT idea for so long. I think anyone that has wanted to take those steps to own their own business will know, the hardest part is coming up with a business product or idea.

We had an idea back at the end of last summer to launch our own website selling good quality chicken coops. It has been extremely hard work, finalising the concept, locating suppliers and building the web pages. For anyone else out there that has a dream of running there own business, this has already been a massively rewarding experience. Rather than just dreaming of running your own business, you can combine your own interests and your desire to build a better future into a product. This is exactly what we have done. I hope to share with you our journey as our business grows. We have not yet made any significant sales, but coming home from work and then channelling our energies into our business venture is already a great sense of being.

This is where the hard work really begins. Getting up the Google rankings and promoting our site. Our products and service are good, but we have to get the traffic to our site.

My blogs will touch on how we got to where we are and hopefully share our success with you.
